On the 30th of March 2023, four United Nation Special Rapporteurs have published their communication, AL BEL 1/2023, on Belgium. They noted with concern the continued deterioration of the reception system for asylum seekers in Belgium since 2021, which led to thousands of homeless asylum seekers, including families and children, living on the streets and in informal settlements in precarious and unhealthy conditions. Moreover, the Rapporteurs noted with concern that this situation has been ongoing for a long time and continues to deteriorate without long-term sustainable solutions. In addition, they are deeply concerned about the particularly vulnerable situation of families and children, including unaccompanied minors, and are gravely concerned about their exposure to situations of violence. The Rapporteurs are also concerned about the alleged delays in accessing procedures for registering applications for international protection.
